Great art is founded in individual expression. An artist must spend time learning the skills that allow for competent self-expression. Technical knowledge and skill free the individual to access their personal voice, and share that expression with others. Our goal is to contribute to the process of developing strong artistic voices for the benefit of all, by teaching students to access the skills necessary to create competent works of art.

Our Approach

The primary goal of Marin Art School is to give students a strong foundation in the skills related to creating realistic art. Properly armed with this foundation of skills and discipline, the student/artist will be equipped to explore any path he/she desires. We teach from life using still life set-ups, models and landscapes. Our teaching objectives can be stated simply - "large before small". Large value masses must be accurately seen and depicted before attention is given to smaller details. The large relationship of warm to cool colors must be seen and maintained. Always stating the largest relationship accurately first allows the work to maintain beautiful solidity and integrity.

We are accustomed to viewing the world in a different way. We tend to focus on detail first, leaving the larger truths at a subliminal level. Bringing these to the forefront of our awareness takes training, time and patience. We know that "practice makes permanent" so we are aggressive in our insistence that our students understand and practice this approach.
